With over fifty roles performed, Gustavo López Manzitti is one of the most prominent and versatile tenors of today. His repertoire spans from bel canto to the most demanding roles in Wagnerian opera, standing out as the first Argentine tenor to have performed Wagner's Siegfried of Götterdämmerung in Germany and Tristan.
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Gustavo began his musical studies at the National Conservatory Carlos López Buchardo, where he completed his Piano training under the guidance of Maestro Juan Carlos Arabián. He later expanded his studies in Composition and Orchestral Conducting with teachers Irma Urteaga and José Martí Llorca. His vocal training began in Argentina with renowned professors such as Carlos Guichandut, Horacio Amauri, Nino Falzetti, and María Rosa Farré, and continued in the United States with Giovanni Consiglio and David Christopher.
In 2024, Gustavo made a milestone in his career by becoming the first Argentine tenor to perform the challenging role of Siegfried in Götterdämmerung by Richard Wagner at the Landestheater Coburg, receiving praise from both critics and the public. The production was directed by Alexander Müller Elmau, with Maestro Daniel Carter conducting. Additionally, he made his debut in the role of Luigi in Il Tabarro by Giacomo Puccini, also in Coburg, in a production by Neil Barry Moss and conducted by Daniel Carter.
In 2024 he was awarded the title of "Best Argentine Singer" by the Argentine Music Critics Association.
His talent also took him to the prestigious Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, where he made his debut in Spain as Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss, directed by Joan Anton Rechi and conducted by Guillermo García Calvo. The production was highly successful, solidifying him as one of the most outstanding voices of his voice type. In the same year, he added to his repertoire the role of Erik in Der fliegende Holländer by Wagner, once again in Coburg, under the direction of Neil Barry Moss and Daniel Carter.
In 2023, he returned to Switzerland to perform Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni at Picassoplatz Basel, in a concert version conducted by Facundo Agudín. That same year, he made his long-awaited debut as Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut by Giacomo Puccini at the Teatro El Círculo in Rosario, in a production by Marcelo Perusso and under the musical direction of Mario Perusso.
His return to the Teatro Argentino de La Plata was with another emblematic role of the Verdi repertoire: Radamés in Aida, in a production by Concepción Perre and Paz Perre, with direction by Carlos Vieu. Additionally, he debuted the demanding role of Dick Johnson in La Fanciulla del West by Puccini at the Theatro Municipal in São Paulo, under the stage direction of Carla Camurati and musical direction by Roberto Minczuk.
Finally, he closed the year with a powerful performance as Macduff in Macbeth by Verdi at the Landestheater Coburg, directed by Neil Barry Moss and conducted by Daniel Carter.
During the 2022 season, he performed as Cavaradossi in Tosca (Teatro El Círculo de Rosario) and as Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos at the Teatro Colón in Bogotá, Colombia.
He performed at the reopening of the 2021 season at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, singing the tenor solo in Das Lied von der Erde by Gustav Mahler with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra. That year, he gave concerts at the IFT and Del Globo theatres and performed as Manrico in Il Trovatore at the Teatro El Círculo in Rosario.
Among his last performances before the pandemic (2019), we highlight his debut as Tristan in Tristan und Isolde by Richard Wagner at the Auditorio del Sodre in Montevideo, Cavalleria Rusticana on tour in Switzerland (Théâtre du Passage in Neuchâtel, Théâtre de la Cité in Fribourg, and Festival Stand'été in Moutier), Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, and Radamès in Aida in the USA (New York and Connecticut). In 2018, Gustavo López Manzitti performed as the poet Rodolfo in La Bohème at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and, by invitation of the Staatsoper Berlin, participated in Tristan und Isolde under the baton of Maestro Daniel Barenboim. Earlier that year, he performed his celebrated portrayal of Jim Mahoney in Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny at the Teatro Mayor in Bogotá, Colombia. He also sang Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at the same theatre with the Wiener Akademie, conducted by Martin Haselböck. Later, he portrayed Don Carlo at the Teatro del Bicentenario in San Juan and performed as the tenor soloist in Das Lied von der Erde in Paraná, Argentina. He also embodied Marceau in the opera Blanca de Beaulieu at the CCK.
In 2017, Gustavo López Manzitti played leading roles in three new productions at the Teatro Colón: Maurizio in Adriana Lecouvreur, Jim Mahoney in Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny, and Andrea Chénier. He also portrayed Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly at the Teatro Municipal in Bahía Blanca.
Earlier performances include a highly praised Macduff in Macbeth by Verdi and Orsino in Beatrix Cenci by Ginastera at the Teatro Colón, Jim Mahoney in Mahagonny at the Teatro Municipal in Santiago de Chile, and Rodolfo in La Bohème at the Teatro Argentino in La Plata. He was acclaimed for his much-anticipated return as Werther at both the Teatro Colón and Teatro Avenida in 2015; during that season, he made his debut as Faust in La Damnation de Faust (Auditorio SODRE in Montevideo) and Don Carlo in its Italian version at the Teatro Colón.
Gustavo López Manzitti has frequently performed in the United States. In 2005, he made his debut in New York at the Isaac Stern Auditorium of Carnegie Hall as Carlo VII in a concert version of Giovanna D'Arco by Verdi with the New York Grand Opera Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by Vincent La Selva. In subsequent seasons, he was invited by numerous opera houses in the country: Opera Tampa for Il Trovatore and Tosca, Virginia Opera (Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci, Il Trovatore, and Aida), Sarasota Opera (Don Carlos in the French version and Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci), Orlando Opera (Il Trovatore), Anchorage Opera (Il Trovatore), Opera Delaware (Rigoletto, Carmen, and Tosca), Atlantic Coast Opera Festival (Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci), Gateway Classical Music Society (Carmen and Aida), and The Center of Music and Arts of Wintersville, Ohio (La Bohème). He made his debut in Canada in 2004, performing arias at the Le Gala de l'Opéra concert at the Grand Théâtre de Québec under the baton of Giovanni Regioli. After this success, he was invited by the same venue to sing Don José in Carmen in 2006. At the Chrysler Theatre in Windsor, Ontario, Gustavo performed Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana.
He has also portrayed Chénier at Kungliga Operan in Stockholm, Tito in La Clemenza di Tito at the Auditorium of Palma de Mallorca, Don José in Carmen, and Count Ciano in the world premiere of Il Duce at the Teatro Solís in Montevideo.
Since his debut as Albazar in Il Turco in Italia in 2000, Gustavo López Manzitti has been regularly invited by the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. There, he performed the leading roles in Mahagonny, Rigoletto (2002 and 2004), Simon Boccanegra (2003 and 2011), Carmen (2003 and 2004), Idomeneo, I due Foscari, I Lombardi, Armide, Doña Francisquita, and the previously mentioned Werther, Ariadne auf Naxos, Don Carlo, Beatrix Cenci, and Macbeth. In 2014, he was chosen by Maestro Daniel Barenboim to sing in the concert version of Tristan und Isolde as part of his Music and Reflection Festival, alongside artists such as Waltraud Meier, Peter Seiffert and René Pape, accompanied by the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra.
Gustavo López Manzitti is also frequently invited to perform at other important opera houses in Buenos Aires. At the Teatro Argentino de La Plata, he performed La Bohème, Werther, Il Trovatore, Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci, Madama Butterfly, Andrea Chénier, Alceste, and La Traviata. At Teatro Avenida, he performed Werther in the 2004 and 2015 seasons, Ernani, Adriana Lecouvreur, La Clemenza di Tito, Lucrezia Borgia, Beggar’s Opera, and Die Fledermaus. At Teatro Margarita Xirgu, he played Gualtiero in Il Pirata and Ruggero in Le Villi. The famous Estadio Luna Park saw him perform as Alfredo in La Traviata and Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly.
He has also appeared as the leading tenor at several venues in Argentina, including the Auditorio Juan Victoria (Samson et Dalila) and the Teatro del Bicentenario (Don Carlo) in San Juan, El Círculo de Rosario (Rigoletto, Luisa Fernanda, Il Trovatore, and Tosca), the Teatro Provincial de Salta (Rigoletto), and the Teatro Vera de Corrientes (I Pagliacci).
Gustavo has been invited several times to perform in concert. In 2016, he sang with the Orquesta Estable del Teatro Colón at the Usina del Arte in a concert of opera arias and duets. He was invited by renowned baritone Sherrill Milnes to participate in the concerts A Night of Stars and Arias and Encores. He sang the tenor solo in the South American premieres of Rienzi by Richard Wagner at the Teatro Colón, conducted by Janos Kulka, and Te Deum in D by Georg Friedrich Händel, conducted by Alan Tongue. Throughout several seasons, he performed in the Zurich Gala de Mar mega concerts and frequently appeared with the New York Grand Opera Orchestra, New World Philharmonic Orchestra, Orquestra Simfónica de Balears, Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional, Orquesta Filarmónica de Buenos Aires, Orquesta Estable del Teatro Colón, Orquesta Estable del Teatro Argentino de La Plata, Orquesta Sinfónica de Rosario, Orquesta Sinfónica de la Universidad de San Juan, and Orquesta Sinfónica de Avellaneda.
His theatrical work as a singer, actor, and instrumentalist is eclectic. He was a member of the famous musical comedy group Les Luthiers for several years in Buenos Aires and performed tours in much of Spain and Latin America. Together with Uruguayan musician and writer Leo Maslíah, he formed the Maslíah-Manzitti duo, performing in Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Brazil, and on tours throughout Argentina, and recording several commercial albums. At the Teatro Maipo in Buenos Aires, he performed for two consecutive seasons as Tony Candolino in the local version of Master Class-Maria Callas, alongside Norma Aleandro (winner of the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress).
